On World Family Doctor Day 2026, Swiftio co-founder Dr Gihan de Mel reflects on the quiet, deep work GPs do across Australian residential aged care, and why technology should protect that relationship rather than replace it.

Today is World Family Doctor Day.

At Swiftio, we see every day how much family doctors hold together. The quieter work. The deep work.

Knowing the resident before the fall. Understanding the daughter's concern in the room. Recognising when something small is actually the beginning of something serious.

In residential aged care, this work is often invisible until it is missing.

A good GP can reduce unnecessary hospital transfers, support nurses under pressure, reassure families, and empower patients' rights, bring clinical judgement into moments that are often complex, emotional and time-sensitive.

Swiftio exists because we believe family doctors remain central to aged care. Technology should not replace that relationship. It should protect it, extend it, and make it easier for the right GP to be there when needed.

The system would not hold without you. Happy World Family Doctor Day.

Swiftio is opening a founding cohort for 10 Victorian GPs who want to build a real micro-practice in aged care - defined facilities, real relationships, billing handled, and an AI-enabled workflow that supports rather than replaces continuity of care.

As some of you might already know, I am building something new with Swiftio.

I am now looking for a further 10 GPs in Victoria to join the founding cohort.

We coordinate confirmed GP visits in real time - while supporting the usual GP, not replacing them. Continuity still matters.

For you, it's different to locum work. You get a defined group of facilities of your choice + more as we expand. You build relationships. You control your schedule. We handle billing.

Importantly, you get to build a micro-practice - something that grows, not just shifts you fill. You can bring in your own associates over time, build it into a real micro-business, and generate income even when you're not there.

Leaner models. AI/tech-enabled workflows. Rideshare built in. If you're already using tools like Heidi, you'll recognise where this is heading. This is about extending that mindset into aged care.

We're also building a tight, collaborative group of GPs - early, aligned, and supporting each other as this model evolves. We're keeping this deliberately small.

If this resonates, I'd love to show you what it looks like. - Gihan

On the ground. In the trenches. Listening.

One of the best parts of building Swiftio isn't the tech - it's the people.

This week, our founder Dr Gihan de Mel made his Swiftio rounds at one of our partnered aged care centres - not just to check in on patients, but to chat with the amazing nurses and team members who use Swiftio every day. Their stories, feedback, frustrations, and wins are what shape our platform.

From front desk coordination to clinical handover, every workflow has been designed at the coalface with the staff who live and breathe aged care.

That's our promise: real tech, built with real people, for real-world care.

To the nurses, admins, and carers across our pilot sites - thank you. You are the heart of this.

Every patient deserves timely care. Every nurse deserves support. Every GP deserves balance.

Before Swiftio, aged care nurses spent hours buried in paperwork and endless phone calls, trying to connect their patients with GPs. GPs juggled complex schedules, facing burnout from inefficiencies. But the real cost was the human toll: patients left waiting, carers overwhelmed, GPs stretched too thin.

We've transformed this manual, paper-based chaos into seamless digital connections, enabling aged care nurses to raise visit requests with a few taps and GPs to deliver care precisely when it's needed most.

Join us on our digitisation vision for patients to be seen, heard and cared for as swiftly as possible.
